VALUE TO LEAGUE MEMBERS
Policy DevelopmentThe League has long been recognized as a leader in developing and formulating freight policies over all transportation modes. Both domestically and internationally, the League is respected and is looked to as a reliable and credible resource in understanding how new initiatives will impact the freight industry. Through its standing committees and Board of Directors our members are the driving forces in shaping freight transportation policy today and will continue to do so well into tomorrow. Members concerned with specific policy matters or interested in seeing new policy will make their concerns known to the standing committees. Policy positions are developed through the standing committees representing Air, Highway, Rail Ocean, Inland Waterway and Hazardous Materials. Committees meet regularly to review current concerns and issues as well and dealing with pending legislation and regulations. The committees undertake a thorough review of issues taking in to account all sides of the issues. The committees will invite presentations from proponents and opponents of an issue as well as hearing from key governmental policy makers. They then develop a policy position which is presented to the League’s Board of Directors for approval. Once approved, the League staff will work with interested parties both in government and the private sector toward the implementation of that policy.

EducationCareer advancement, meeting new challenges and taking advantage of the latest opportunities and trends requires today’s professional logistician to be up to date on the latest developments. The League has a proven track record of providing educational forums which meets all these needs. In 2003, for example, the League offered a comprehensive one-day security program across the country on what every professional needs to know to move freight efficiently, and effectively. The League’s affiliation with the American Society of Transportation and Logistics® (AST&L) also offers members access to an organization that certifies individuals in the Transportation and Logistics field. This certification is achieved by the successful completion of a series of exams which then recognizes an individual as Certified in Transportation and Logistics (CTL).
