NITL LAUNCHES NEW SELECT COMMITTEE ON SECURITY
Arlington, VA – In the post “9/11” environment The National Industrial Transportation League (NITL/League) has been an active partner with the federal government in representing the transport industry’s views on advancing meaningful freight transportation security initiatives that will make our transport systems safer along with keeping commerce moving efficiently and effectively. This undertaking has led to participation with both Congressional and administrative branches of the federal government on a number of programs that are designed to prevent terrorists from using critical supply-chains to advance their own ends.
In recognition of the continuing importance of the NITL’s role in these matters, and in keeping with the Board of Directors action at its last meeting, League Chairman Mick Barr announced yesterday (February 2) the creation of a new Select Committee on Security (SCS). Its purpose will be to serve as a primary resource in developing recommendations for the League on current and new security programs/plans as well as to advance positions which will make our domestic and international supply chains safer.
Chairman Barr has also announced the appointment of Mr. William L. (Bill) O’Connor of UPS Supply Chain Solutions to chair this new committee. His experience in the industry is extensive having served with IBM Corporation in global logistics. Additionally he’s worked for several major cross-border third party logistics providers (3PLs). Mr. O’Connor also spent more than 10 years with the U.S. Customs Service (now Bureau of Customs & Border Protection). In naming Mr. O’Connor to this post Mr. Barr said, “this background and Bill’s enthusiasm for the role, should provide an excellent base for the leadership of this important committee.”
The membership of the new select group will comprise each of the chairpersons from the NITL’s “modal” (Air, Domestic Waterways, Highway, Ocean and Rail Transportation) committees. Also included are the Information Technology Advancement (ITAC) and Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) committee chairs. Each chairperson will appoint one additional person from their respective committee to serve on the new security group. The SCS membership will also be comprised of two members of the League’s Executive Committee.
All together the creation and organization of this group should position the League to be a continuing active force in representing the views of the freight industry transport sector on current and new security efforts for now and into the foreseeable future.
The League founded in 1907 represents more than 600 member companies engaged in the transportation of goods in domestic and international commerce. The organization is the oldest and largest trade association in the U.S. representing all sectors of the freight transportation industry including shippers/receivers of goods as well as carriers and other entities involved in the transportation of goods. The League’s shipper members use all modes of transportation to ship a wide variety of goods across the nation and internationally.
