Congressman Oberstar Joins League’s Spring Forum

Arlington, VA – Congressman James L. Oberstar (D-MN) has agreed to be the keynote luncheon speaker at The National Industrial Transportation League’s Spring Transportation Forum on Monday, March 22, 2004. The two-day program, March 22-23, 2004 will be held at the Key Bridge Marriott in Arlington, Virginia.

The Congressman is a senior member of the House of Representatives serving in his 15th term. He is the ranking minority member of the prestigious House Transportation and Infrastructure (T&I) Committee which is a key force in helping to shape the nation’s transportation policies.

The T&I Committee is currently in the forefront of efforts to act on a six-year highway reauthorization bill. The latest development is that the Committee yesterday (March 1) cancelled a markup of a bill (H.R. 3550) which was tentatively scheduled for today. The full committee was then due to act tomorrow. While the current delay in moving the measure has been attributed to potentially controversial changes in how environmental reviews of highway and transit projects are handled, the biggest unresolved detail is how much the bill will cost and who will pay for it. Late reports indicate that the White House may support a stop-gap two-year bill which would push longer-term authorization past Election Day.

“We are privileged that Rep. Oberstar will join us for this important program. Over the years he has worked tirelessly to advancing the nation’s freight transportation needs and his participation in our Spring Forum is an honor,” said League President John Ficker.

Other confirmed speakers include: Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta; Deputy Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Admiral James Loy; Annette Sandberg, administrator, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration; Captain William Schubert, administrator, U.S. Maritime Administration; Roger Nober, chairman, Surface Transportation Board; Steven R. Blust, chairman, Federal Maritime Commission; Christopher Koch, president, World Shipping Council; and, Richard Timmons, president, American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association.
