CLOSING GENERAL SESSION
David E. Sanger

The invited speaker for Tuesday’s Closing General Session is David E. Sanger, White House Correspondent for The New York Times.

Mr. Sanger has been writing for The Times for over 24 years covering New York, Tokyo and Washington. He has reported on such issues as foreign policy, globalization, nuclear proliferation, and Asian affairs.

Before covering the White House, Mr. Sanger was a correspondent and then bureau chief of The New York Times in Tokyo, where he developed a specialization in writing on the influence of economics on foreign policy, and the relationships between the United States and its major allies. In 1994, he became the chief Washington economic correspondent, later being named senior writer and, in 1999, White House correspondent.

David Sanger has received numerous journalistic awards, including being named twice among New York Times reporting teams honored with the Pulitzer Prize. His first Pulitzer was in 1987, playing a major role on the team that investigated the causes of the space shuttle Challenger disaster. Later, he was among another Pulitzer-winning team to write about the Clinton Administration’s struggle to control exports to China.

Mr. Sanger graduated magna cum laude in government from Harvard in 1982.

EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS (IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER)

Energy & Environment—Part I: Transportation’s Burden

The transportation industry has a complicated relationship with energy markets and environmental protection because it both exacerbates the problem while offering various solutions. This session will frame the problem from several different perspectives.

Security Acronyms—What Does All This Government Alphabet Soup Mean?

C-TPAT, ACE, CSI, TSA, DHS, TWIC, FBI, CBP…these and other key acronyms are now part of our everyday life, yet do we really know how they affect our supply chain? Do these organizations work together, independently, or at cross-purposes? Do they work at all? How should you coordinate your efforts with them? Our panel, all experts in the heightened security environment of today’s world, will navigate us through this maze of organizations, regulations and responsibilities, and leave us with an understanding of their continuing impact on our business.

Rail Capacity—What’s Needed to Meet Our Needs Today and Tomorrow?

Which comes first: new capacity to haul hoped-for shipments, or a need that waits for capacity to be brought on line? How can this “capacity risk” be diminished by railroads, shippers, and others to improve service, reduce bottlenecks, and achieve the lowest total cost for all concerned? Is increased private car ownership the answer? Is intermodal the answer? What role should short lines play, and what are the pros and cons of relaxing short line abandonment procedures? These and other critical rail service issues will be addressed by our panel of experts.

Supply Chain Performance Metrics

This seminar will focus on establishing performance metrics for measuring the effectiveness and efficiency of logistics management, whether in-house or out-sourced. The panel will include a shipper and 3PLs.

Crisis Management or Disaster Recovery— Which Will It Be?

How do YOU manage your transportation components in an ever-changing environment, while controlling costs and improving service? Is it really possible to plan for the future and what it may hold—including hurricanes, capacity crunches, driver shortages and maybe even a pandemic?

Dispatcher/Customer Service Phone Sales

Phone sales and communication are essential for today’s industry, a transportation marketing expert will lead an exciting session of best practices for 3PLs, shippers and carriers.

Energy & Environment—Part II: Transportation’s Solutions

Going forward, the transportation industry must address a plethora of energy and environmental challenges. Some are already mandated, others are likely to come. This session will allow companies and organizations that are already working on solutions to lay out some possible industry responses.

RFID—The Pitfalls and Challenges Yet to be Overcome

RFID has arrived—or has it? The government uses it, large retailers and their major suppliers have been using it, and so RFID technology must be running smoothly by now, right? Wrong! Our panel of experts on RFID implementation and use will describe the state of RFID today, and examine what it will take to make this technology useful, practical, affordable, and successful for the entire supply chain.

The Anatomy of a Freight Claim

This session will look at the freight claim process, from start to finish, and include a discussion of what to do if your load is held hostage. The panel will comprise a lawyer, a 3PL, a shipper and a carrier.

The Costs of Congestion

Recent studies have pegged the costs of highway congestion at over $60 billion a year, and growing. How does this translate to the overall freight community—carriers and shippers alike? And what is the relationship between congestion, and the vitality of the U.S. economy? Discussants, including shippers, carrier capacity specialists, and public sector infrastructure planners, will attempt to quantify the costs of congestion on the global supply chain.

The Mistakes Air Shippers Make: Where They Leave Money on the Table

Rates and discounts for airfreight and air express shipments are easy to negotiate—but what about total delivered cost? What economic land mines are hidden in a carrier’s service guide? How can accessorials be controlled? Have fuel surcharges become an additional profit center all their own? This session will provide hands-on, real world examples of how shippers can confidently craft contracts to protect them from expensive surprises.

Top 10 Challenges in Managing Your Supply Chain

Rising transportation prices? Rising fuel cost? Inconsistent and erratic service? Tight capacity? Port service? In this day of double digit rate increases, how do you budget for transportation?

SPOUSE PROGRAMS

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2006

Choose between two outstanding programs. Both tours will depart and return to the Greater Fort Lauderdale Broward County Convention Center

Fort Lauderdale from the Everglades to the Waterways 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

For centuries, nature has persevered to create one of the world’s most intriguing environments: the Florida Everglades. An airboat ride at Everglades Holiday Park is unforgettable. You are totally free in one of the most beautiful habitats on earth. Fly over a river of grass into the heart of the beautiful Everglades where nature literally surrounds you. Airboats are guided by skilled naturalists familiar with every aspect of the Florida Everglades— history, vegetation, and wildlife—as well as its impact upon the community. Next, you’ll be amazed by the Alligator Show, an informative, interactive opportunity to learn about American Alligators and a variety of other flora and fauna.

We will now take you from the untamed wild of the Everglades to discover the unforgettable Intracoastal Waterways of Fort Lauderdale. This scenic adventure is a memorable one-of-a-kind experience. Visit the Historic New River in Sunny Fort Lauderdale and see how the rich and famous live!

The modern, elegant yachts offer panoramic views and air-conditioned salons. Guests hear fascinating narration by one of the Coast Guard licensed Captains describing the sights, the history and legends of the waterways. There’s nothing like it, not even in Venice!

Following the Everglades Holiday Park tour, guests will enjoy lunch at Max’s Grill at the Riverwalk.

Lunch & Learn with Chef Allen Susser 10:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (Limited to first 25 registrants)
